Sentry Mode not working? The usual causes, in order.

Updated 19 August 2026

"Not working" usually means one of three different problems: the car will not arm, the car arms but does not record, or the car records but you never hear about it. Find your symptom below and work down the list. The causes are ordered by how often they turn out to be the answer.

It will not arm

It arms but does not record

It records but never tells you anything

This one is not a fault. The Tesla app only pushes three kinds of Sentry notification: the alarm, a door or trunk opened while locked, and a hard impact. A person circling your car, leaning on it, or denting it in a parking lot is recorded silently. There is no setting to change that; it is the design. The full list is in the notifications guide.

If you want a push for every event, that takes an app on Tesla's official streaming platform. Sentry IQ does exactly this, free: every Sentry event on your phone in seconds, with honk, flash and lock one tap away.

Still stuck?

Reboot the screen (hold both scroll wheels), check for a pending software update, and try a different USB drive before assuming hardware failure. If Sentry Mode misbehaves after an update, it is worth searching the Tesla forums for your exact software version; regressions happen and are usually fixed in the next release.
